Square dancing is a high-energy team activity where four couples form a square, often walking over 7,000 steps per dance session while navigating complex patterns called by a leader. Originating from 17th-century European dances, it became popular in the US, is the official state dance of 19 states, and offers a full-body mental and physical workout.
- It’s Brain Training: Following the caller’s instructions requires intense focus and spatial awareness, acting as a puzzle that can improve cognitive function.
- Hidden Cardio: A single night of square dancing can involve over 6,000 to 7,000 steps, providing the same benefits as low-impact aerobics.
- It’s Teamwork: You are part of a team of eight. If one person breaks down, the whole group breaks down, but it’s treated as a fun, collaborative experience.
- Not Just Country Music: Modern square dancing can be done to pop, rock, techno, or hip-hop music, as long as it has an up-tempo beat.
- French Roots: The common step “do-si-do” is derived from the French phrase dos-à-dos, meaning “back-to-back”.
